Ontario Walks 2009 launched with Ontario government, OMA encouragement
(Toronto) Ontario’s public, private and non-profit sectors came together today to launch the 7th annual Ontario Walks programme -- aimed at empowering Ontarians to live happier, healthier lives.
The 2009 programme, unveiled today, will provide free, fun walking activities in six cities across Ontario (see attached backgrounder for locations and dates), and is endorsed by the Ontario Medical Association, corporate sponsors and volunteer groups province-wide.
“While some business sectors receive economic stimulus packages, individuals are looking for their personal stimulus packages – for ways to maintain good physical and emotional health during these difficult times,” explained Tom Fiore, President of Momentum 1 – Communities in Motion, the non-profit group behind Ontario Walks, “After all, your health is your wealth”.
The Honourable Margarett Best, Ontario’s Minister of Health Promotion will be leading the inaugural walk in Toronto on April 19. She told the launch event, “Our government is pleased to work with health professionals, volunteers, and the corporate and non-profit sectors for the benefit of Ontarians. Together, we can help people live healthier lives, reduce health care costs, and improve the quality of life in Ontario.”
“The health benefits of walking are clear,” noted Dr. Ken Arnold, President of the OMA, “Regular participation in exercise such as walking can help prevent illness, improve fitness, fight depression and prolong life. We strongly encourage Ontarians to take personal responsibility for their health and wellness through programmes such as this.”
Registration for Ontario Walks activities is free at www.OntarioWalks.com. The website also provides a complete guide to the highly-successful Ontario Walks programme, which has grown from a single walk in Toronto to a provincial network of events each spring and fall that introduce Ontarians to the health, social and environmental benefits of walking.
